Hi, I’m Joanne, also known as JRo!

I began my photography career working in a black & white darkroom, developing film and hand printing photographs. In 1996, after spending four years inhaling chemicals (and learning a lot about printing and photography), I moved to New Mexico and started working as a photojournalist for a newspaper. From there I went on to shoot for papers in Maryland and Virginia, photographing everything from U.S. presidents to high school football games.

It was while I was working as a photojournalist that I started shooting weddings, and then eventually portraits of kids and families. Even though I have left the world of newspapers, my style is still influenced by photojournalism. My photos are candid, natural and relaxed. My aim is to capture the real spirit of you and your family and to have my pictures tell the story of your wedding day.

My images have been shown at the Ellipse Arts Center in Arlington, VA and the Touchstone Gallery in Washington, DC. My work has also been featured on the Smithsonian Magazine web site, the Savvy Photographer blog , the Moment Junkie blog and Little Bellows blog.

I live in Northern Virginia with my husband, my sons Max and Oliver, and our cats, Lenny & Squiggy.

Ellen and Brian | McLean Wedding Photography

Ellen and Brian had a small, low-key wedding at home last month. It was supposed to be a backyard wedding, but the ceremony was moved into their living room because of rain. Ellen’s father is a meteorologist, and you can see him monitoring the radar in a photo below. The ceremony was beautiful and the rain let up a bit after the vows, so we were able to take some portraits outside.

Exciting news!

I’m so thrilled that two of my photos were accepted into the ”July” exhibition at the A Smith Gallery! The show runs from July 5th – Aug. 10th in Johnson City, Texas. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it to Texas to see the show first hand, but it was great to see all the images online. You can see them all here!

And these are the two images that are in the show. They are both of my son, Max. The black & white photo was taken at sunset on the beach in Captiva Island, Florida in 2011. The color picture was taken on July 4th, 2012 in Virginia.
